Knoxville Partial Hospitalization Addiction Program
Intensive Support for Those Struggling with Alcohol & Drug Addiction in Tennessee
In addition to our intensive outpatient program, we offer a partial hospitalization program (PHP) for individuals in need of significant treatment for a variety of substance use disorders and addictions. Partial hospitalization is an outpatient program, meaning clients do not live or sleep at our facility. Instead, you continue living at home and travel to our center every day to attend various therapies, group meetings, and other treatments.
Addiction is a disease, but with the proper treatment, recovery is possible. At Tennessee Wellness Center, we tailor our programs to suit the unique needs of each client. We offer a family-oriented, whole-person approach that emphasizes the importance of meaningful relationships, familial healing, and behavioral and mental health support and care.

What Is Partial Hospitalization
Because it includes the word “hospitalization,” the term “partial hospitalization program” can be a bit misleading. Partial hospitalization is slightly less intensive than a residential or inpatient program, and participants do not need to stay at a hospital or receive 24-hour care. In fact, a PHP can often be used to effectively treat a substance use disorder to prevent the need for inpatient care.
The goal of partial hospitalization is to:
- Provide short-term intensive support for those struggling with addiction
- Allow individuals to receive the tools they need to move forward in their recoveries
- Build a support system with the individuals’ families/loved ones
Partial hospitalization is not intended for long-term treatment. Rather, the goal is to provide individuals in need of intensive support with proper treatment that then allows them to advance to a less-intensive outpatient program. However, the exact length of time an individual may remain in a PHP will depend on many factors specific to the individual. Partial hospitalization can last for a few weeks or a few months based on the individual’s needs.
Types of Substance Use Disorders Partial Hospitalization Can Treat
Partial hospitalization can be beneficial for those struggling with all types of substance use disorders and addictions. Depending on the severity of the disease, our staff may recommend an appropriate inpatient facility where you or your loved one can safely detox under the support and supervision of a 24-hour team. This is something that would be done prior to entering our partial hospitalization program.
Partial hospitalization has been shown to effectively treat an array of substance use disorders, including addictions to:
In most cases, following the completion of our PHP, clients go on to receive intensive outpatient treatment, regular outpatient care, and/or aftercare.

When Does Someone Need Partial Hospitalization?
Because addiction affects everyone differently, determining when someone may need partial hospitalization should be done on an individual basis. However, generally speaking, anyone who is severely struggling to function in their day-to-day life due to a substance use disorder may be a good candidate. Our family of addiction specialists and professional staff can help you assess if you or a loved one may benefit from our Knoxville partial hospitalization program.
An ideal PHP candidate is someone who:
- Is motivated to participate in recovery
- Is not at risk of harming him/herself or others
- Has support at home
- Is medically stable
Individuals who are struggling with addiction while also experiencing co-occurring mental health disorders, such as depression or anxiety, may also benefit from partial hospitalization.
